Water Damage on Your Ceiling: Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs
A water stain on your ceiling is never just cosmetic : it’s evidence of active or recent water intrusion above the drywall. By the time you see a stain, the insulation, framing, and drywall above it may already be saturated.
Common Causes of Ceiling Water Damage
- AC condensate overflow : the #1 cause in Florida (especially attic-mounted air handlers)
- Roof leaks : damaged shingles, failed flashing, or deteriorated vent boots
- Upstairs plumbing leaks : supply lines, toilet seals, or shower pans in second-floor bathrooms
- Ice dam equivalent : in Florida, wind-driven rain can push water under shingles during storms
When Ceilings Collapse
Saturated ceiling drywall can hold a surprising amount of water before failing. A standard 4×8 sheet of 1/2″ drywall can absorb over 50 pounds of water. When it reaches its limit, the ceiling collapses : often suddenly and with enough force to damage flooring and furnishings below.
If your ceiling is bulging or sagging: carefully puncture it with a screwdriver over a bucket to relieve the water pressure and prevent uncontrolled collapse.
