Water + Electricity = Danger
Water damage near electrical systems creates an immediate life safety hazard. Every year, electrocution injuries and deaths occur in flooded homes where residents attempted to walk through standing water near live electrical circuits.
When to Shut Off Electricity
Turn off electricity at the main breaker panel when:
- Standing water is within 6 inches of any electrical outlet or switch
- Water has reached the area near your electrical panel
- Ceiling fixtures are dripping or submerged
- Floor-mounted outlets (common in older Florida homes) are in contact with water
Important Safety Rules
- Never step in standing water to reach the breaker panel — call your utility company to disconnect at the meter
- Never touch electrical equipment while standing in water or on wet ground
- Assume all wiring in wet areas is live until confirmed de-energized by a licensed electrician
After the Water Is Gone
Any electrical wiring, outlets, switches, or fixtures that were submerged must be inspected and potentially replaced by a licensed electrician before power is restored. This is a code requirement, not optional.
