Thermal Fogging

Thermal fogging is one of the oldest and most widely used deodorization technologies in fire restoration. How It Works

The thermal fogger heats the deodorizing solution to approximately 350 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, converting it to a vapor that disperses as a dense white fog. Because the fog particles are approximately the same size as smoke particles, they travel to the same places smoke traveled โ€” into wall cavities through electrical outlets, into attic spaces through gaps in the ceiling plane, around doors and windows, and into every crack and crevice the smoke reached.

The deodorizing agent neutralizes odor-causing molecules through chemical reaction, effectively pairing with and neutralizing the smoke compounds rather than simply masking them.

Ozone Generators

Ozone (O3) is a powerful oxidizing gas that destroys odor-causing molecules by breaking their chemical bonds. Professional ozone generators produce ozone in concentrations far higher than anything available in consumer devices, creating an environment where odor molecules are systematically destroyed.

How It Works

Ozone generators pass ambient air across an ultraviolet lamp or corona discharge element, splitting oxygen molecules (O2) and recombining them as ozone (O3). The third oxygen atom is unstable and readily detaches to bond with odor-causing compounds, oxidizing and destroying them. Once the ozone has done its work, it reverts to normal oxygen.

Strengths

  • Powerful oxidation: Ozone is one of the strongest readily available oxidizers, capable of destroying virtually any organic odor molecule
  • Penetration: As a gas, ozone penetrates porous materials, reaching embedded smoke particles that surface cleaning cannot address
  • No chemical residue: Ozone reverts to oxygen after treatment, leaving no chemical residue on surfaces
  • Effective on severe odors: Particularly useful for heavy protein smoke and fuel oil residue odors

Limitations

  • Occupancy prohibition: Ozone at treatment concentrations is harmful to humans, animals, and plants. The structure must be completely unoccupied and sealed during treatment.
  • Material sensitivity: High ozone concentrations can damage natural rubber, certain plastics, fabric dyes, and artwork. Sensitive items must be removed before treatment.
  • Ventilation required: After treatment, the space must be thoroughly ventilated before reoccupation โ€” typically two to four hours.
  • Humidity dependent: Ozone is most effective when humidity is controlled. Florida’s high humidity can interfere with treatment if not managed with dehumidification equipment.
  • Not permanent without source removal: If the odor source (embedded soot) has not been adequately cleaned, ozone treatment provides temporary relief that fades as embedded particles continue to off-gas.

Hydroxyl Generators

Hydroxyl generators represent the newest of the three technologies. They produce hydroxyl radicals (OH) โ€” naturally occurring molecules that are responsible for purifying the atmosphere outdoors. In restoration applications, hydroxyl generators produce these radicals in high concentrations inside the treatment area.

How It Works

Hydroxyl generators use specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light (primarily 254 nm and 185 nm) to split water vapor molecules in the ambient air into hydrogen atoms and hydroxyl radicals. The hydroxyl radicals then react with odor-causing VOCs, breaking them down into carbon dioxide and water vapor. This is the same natural process that cleans the outdoor atmosphere, accelerated to treatment levels.

Strengths

  • Safe for occupied spaces: Hydroxyl radicals are a natural component of breathable air. Treatment can proceed while the space is occupied by people, pets, and plants.
  • Safe for materials: Hydroxyl treatment does not damage rubber, plastics, fabrics, artwork, or other sensitive materials
  • Continuous operation: Units can run 24/7 for extended treatment periods, providing ongoing odor reduction
  • Effective on VOCs: Particularly good at breaking down the volatile organic compounds responsible for lingering smoke odor
  • No ventilation required: No downtime needed after treatment

Limitations

  • Slower action: Hydroxyl treatment works more gradually than ozone. Significant odor reduction may take days to weeks depending on severity.
  • Limited penetration: Hydroxyl radicals have a very short lifespan (fractions of a second) and work primarily in the open air space. They are less effective at penetrating deep into wall cavities and enclosed spaces compared to thermal fogging or ozone.
  • Higher equipment cost: Professional hydroxyl generators are expensive, which may affect the cost of treatment
  • Less effective on severe odors: For heavy smoke contamination, hydroxyl alone may be insufficient and is typically used in combination with other methods

Hydroxyl generators excel at treating contents โ€” furniture, clothing, electronics, documents, and other items that cannot be exposed to ozone. They are ideal for use in occupied or partially occupied spaces, for ongoing treatment during the restoration process, and as a polishing step after thermal fogging and ozone have addressed the heavy odor.
