How Property Restoration Insurance Claims Work
Plain-English explanation of how a restoration claim moves from first-notice through final payment — and where WrightWay fits.

How a Property Restoration Insurance Claim Actually Works
If you’ve never been through a property damage insurance claim, the process can feel opaque. Different parties get involved at different times, the terminology is unfamiliar, and the order of operations is rarely explained up front. This guide walks through the typical lifecycle of a Florida restoration claim — from the moment damage occurs to the moment the project closes — and explains where WrightWay, as the restoration contractor, fits.
Important upfront: WrightWay is a licensed Florida general contractor that performs the restoration work. We document, estimate, mitigate, and rebuild. We are not a public adjuster, do not handle your claim, do not negotiate with your carrier, and do not determine coverage. Those decisions sit with you and your insurance company. If you want claim advocacy, the right professional is a licensed Florida public adjuster or an attorney who specializes in property insurance.
The Players
- You (the policyholder) — own the policy, file the claim, make decisions, ultimately responsible for the deductible.
- Your insurance carrier — the company that issued the policy. They process the claim, determine coverage, and issue payments.
- Your adjuster — the licensed individual at the carrier (or hired by the carrier) who inspects the loss, scopes the damage, and determines the carrier’s estimate.
- The restoration contractor (WrightWay) — performs the mitigation and reconstruction work; provides photo documentation and Xactimate-formatted estimates.
- (Optional) Public adjuster or attorney — a separate professional, hired by you, who advocates for your claim. Not the same as a restoration contractor.
Hour 0 — The Loss
Burst pipe, hurricane, fire, sewage backup, or biohazard event. Your priority is safety, then stopping further damage.
Hour 0–24 — Mitigation
Standard Florida property policies require the policyholder to mitigate further damage — meaning, take reasonable steps to prevent the loss from getting worse. That’s water extraction, board-up, tarping, structural drying, contents protection. WrightWay’s emergency dispatch is designed for this window. We document conditions before, during, and after mitigation, because that documentation matters when the claim is reviewed.
Hour 0–48 — File the Claim
You contact your carrier and report the loss. The carrier opens a claim, assigns a claim number, and assigns an adjuster. In Florida, most carriers require notice of loss within a defined window — read your policy or call your agent.
Day 1–14 — Adjuster Inspection
The adjuster (carrier-employed or independent) inspects the loss, photographs damage, takes measurements, and writes the carrier’s estimate using Xactimate or a similar tool. WrightWay can be on-site for this inspection — we walk the adjuster through what we found, what we mitigated, and the scope ahead. We don’t argue with the adjuster. We provide our own Xactimate-formatted scope so the carrier has a complete restoration-contractor view of the project.
Day 7–30 — Coverage Determination
The carrier reviews the adjuster’s estimate, the policy, and any reservation-of-rights or coverage questions. They issue a coverage decision and (typically) an initial payment. Decisions about what is or isn’t covered live entirely with the carrier and the policy.
Day 14+ — Mitigation Completion & Reconstruction
WrightWay completes mitigation work (drying, demolition, contents handling) and begins reconstruction. Supplemental scope items the adjuster may have missed are documented and submitted to the carrier as supplementals. We never “pad” estimates — supplementals reflect actual work that’s needed and verifiable.
Closeout
Final invoicing, depreciation recovery (where applicable), photo documentation packet, and lien release. Payment terms vary by carrier and project; WrightWay’s policy is transparent invoicing so there are no surprises.
Where Property Owners Get Tripped Up
- Skipping mitigation — assuming the carrier will pay for everything regardless of timing. Carriers can deny portions of claims where mitigation was inadequate.
- Choosing a contractor without Xactimate experience — generic contractors who don’t speak the carrier’s language create unnecessary friction.
- Confusing a public adjuster with a restoration contractor — they are different roles. Florida regulates public adjusters; we are not one.
- Signing an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) — Florida AOB law has changed; know what you’re signing. WrightWay does not require AOB to perform work.
- Waiting too long to file — most policies have specific notice timeframes.
