The storm’s Category 4 winds caused severe structural damage to Tice’s modest housing stock, stripping roofs, collapsing screen enclosures, and driving rain into exposed interiors. Hurricane Charley in 2004 crossed through the Fort Myers area with similarly devastating winds, causing widespread damage to the manufactured homes and older concrete block structures that characterize much of Tice’s residential landscape. Hurricane Irma in 2017 brought additional flooding from the Caloosahatchee and rainfall that overwhelmed the community’s drainage capacity. The cumulative effect of multiple hurricanes on Tice’s older, more affordable housing stock has created ongoing restoration needs as residents work to repair and upgrade their homes.
