Can Water-Damaged Hardwood Floors Be Saved?
Hardwood floors and water are natural enemies. But a quick response with proper drying equipment can save hardwood floors that many homeowners (and some contractors) assume are ruined. The key factors are time, water category, and drying technique.
Common Hardwood Floor Water Damage
- Cupping : edges of boards rise higher than centers. This indicates moisture from below. Mild cupping often resolves with proper drying.
- Crowning : centers of boards rise higher than edges. This occurs when cupped floors are sanded before fully drying, or when moisture comes from above.
- Buckling : boards lift completely from the subfloor. This is severe damage from significant water exposure.
- Staining/discoloration : dark stains indicate tannin bleed from water exposure or mold growth beneath the floor.
When Floors Can Be Saved
Hardwood floors exposed to Category 1 water for less than 24 hours can usually be saved with professional drying using floor mat drying systems. These specialized mats create negative pressure that draws moisture from the wood and subfloor.
When Replacement is Necessary
- Category 2 or 3 water exposure
- Buckling (boards lifting from subfloor)
- Standing water for 48+ hours
- Subfloor damage or mold beneath the flooring
